Near Cheomseong-ro in Gyeongju's Wolseong-dong, the summer sky fades through lavender and pale rose as twilight approaches over the Silla capital's archaeological heartland. The silhouettes of mature trees and the gentle curves of ancient tumuli create a horizon line that has barely changed in thirteen centuries. Cheomseongdae, the seventh-century astronomical observatory that gives this street its name, stands somewhere nearby in the gathering dusk, a reminder that the Silla court was charting stars from this very ground when most of Europe was in its early medieval period. The August warmth lingers in the stone paths even as the light withdraws.
