Photographed at Wonhyo-ro, Jungbu-dong, Gyeongju-si in August 2025
A monumental grass-covered burial mound dominates the summer landscape near Wonhyo-ro in Gyeongju-si, its smooth conical form rising steeply against a sky streaked with high white clouds. Several ancient trees grow directly from the mound's slopes, their gnarled trunks and spreading canopies creating dramatic silhouettes against the bright green hillside. The grass covering the tumulus glows in vivid lime green under the August sun, with long shadows from the trees striping diagonally across the surface. At the base, a few visitors with parasols provide a sense of scale, appearing tiny against the massive burial mound that dates to the Silla dynasty over a millennium ago. A low fence and lamp posts line the paved walkway at the bottom of the frame. This iconic view of one of Gyeongju's royal tombs at the Daereungwon complex captures the remarkable preservation of these ancient funerary mounds that dot the city like gentle green giants.
