Photographed at Gangwon-do in January 2022
A massive frozen waterfall towers over visitors in a Gangwon-do mountain valley, its pale blue ice forming dramatic curtains and columns that reach several stories high against the bare winter hillside. Two figures stand at the base of the ice formation, their small scale emphasizing the extraordinary height and volume of the frozen cascade. The ice glows with an ethereal cyan-blue luminescence where the structure is thickest, transitioning to opaque white at its edges and base where snow has accumulated. Bare deciduous trees frame the scene on both sides, their brown branches and the gray-brown hillside providing warm contrast to the dominant blue-white palette of the ice. A wooden railing and walkway are visible at right, indicating this is a maintained attraction rather than a wilderness encounter. Gangwon-do's extreme winter cold regularly produces these spectacular ice formations, which draw photographers and hikers throughout January and February before the spring thaw dismantles them completely.
