Near Hyangiram-ro in Yeosu, the ancient path to Hyangiram hermitage climbs through a landscape where Buddhist devotion and coastal geology have coexisted for over a thousand years. Stone steps worn smooth by centuries of pilgrims' feet ascend between granite boulders and camellia trees, their dark evergreen canopy providing shade even in the September midday sun. Hyangiram, one of Korea's four designated sunrise prayer sites, was founded during the Silla Dynasty and rebuilt multiple times, each iteration adapting to the dramatic cliff-edge terrain rather than attempting to tame it. The temple's integration with the natural rock formations represents a philosophical approach to architecture that treats the mountain as the primary structure and the buildings as respectful additions.
