Inside a grand conservatory-style event venue at FKI Tower in Yeouido, Seoul, an enormous glass-and-white-lattice ceiling soars above rows of elegantly set dining tables, creating an atmosphere that sits somewhere between a Victorian greenhouse and a modern luxury banquet hall. The ceiling structure is composed of repeating white diamond lattice panels supported by arched steel ribs, and from these hang a series of ornate lantern-style chandeliers with white metalwork frames that cast warm, diffused light downward. The floor is laid in a herringbone brick pattern in warm terracotta tones, and the long communal tables are dressed with white linens and formal place settings. The space is currently empty of guests, allowing the architectural details to command full attention: the way the lattice ceiling creates a rhythmic pattern of light and shadow, the contrast between the industrial scale of the glass roof and the intimate scale of the table settings, the warm amber of the brick floor against the cool white of the overhead structure. FKI Tower, headquarters of the Federation of Korean Industries in Seoul's financial district, contains several high-end event spaces that serve the corporate and diplomatic communities, and this conservatory room represents a particular strand of contemporary Korean luxury that borrows liberally from European grand café aesthetics.
