SeoulCheonggyecheon Stream flows through the heart of Seoul in a shallow channel lined with natural stones and bordered by a paved walking path where a few pedestrians stroll in the winter afternoon light. The stream bed is filled with rounded rocks of various sizes, with a thin sheet of clear water flowing between them and catching glints of reflected sky. Bare winter trees line both sides of the stream path, their dark branches silhouetted against the urban skyline of commercial buildings, glass-fronted offices, and illuminated shop signs that tower above the sunken waterway. A retaining wall of pale stone and tile separates the pedestrian level from the busy street above, where the upper edge of buildings and signage are visible, creating a layered composition that reveals the different levels of the city. The late afternoon light casts long shadows across the stream bed and path, while the buildings in the background begin to show warm interior lighting as the winter day draws to a close.
