Photographed at Naksan-gil, Ihwa-dong, Seoul in March 2025
Spring night descends on Naksan-gil in Seoul's Ihwa-dong, where the hillside park offers one of the city's most intimate vantage points over the eastern neighborhoods below. The path climbs through landscaped gardens where early spring plantings - forsythia, magnolia buds still tightly furled - are lit from below by embedded pathway lights that create small islands of warm illumination in the surrounding darkness. Beyond the park's tree line, Seoul's urban grid stretches to the horizon in a vast field of light, the apartment complexes and commercial districts of Dongdaemun and Seongbuk rendered as abstract patterns of white and amber points. Naksan - literally 'camel mountain' for its humped ridge profile - was part of the original Seoul Fortress wall circuit, and fragments of the 14th-century stone fortification are still visible along the walking path. The March night air is cool enough to require a jacket but mild enough to make an evening walk pleasant, that narrow seasonal window when Korea's outdoor spaces are at their most inviting.
