Seogwipo-siAlong Ilchul-ro on Jeju's southeastern coast near Seogwipo, the September sea presents itself in graduated layers of crystalline blue. The coastline here is raw and unimproved, basalt ledges dropping directly into deep water without the intervention of seawalls or concrete tetrapods. Subtropical vegetation clings to the cliff edges, its dark green a counterpoint to the luminous water below. The midday sun has burned off any morning haze, leaving the air transparent enough to see individual wave patterns far offshore. This is Jeju at its most elemental, before the tourist infrastructure reasserts itself around the next headland.
