Pohang-siInside Hwanho Park in Pohang, a dense summer canopy of broadleaf trees creates a cool green tunnel that filters the August midday sun into scattered coins of light on the forest floor. The park follows the shore of Pohang's inner harbor, and through gaps in the foliage the industrial waterfront is occasionally visible, a contrast that makes the forest shade feel even more precious. Korean zelkova and cherry trees form the primary canopy, their trunks thick enough to suggest the park's planting dates back to the city's postwar development era when green spaces were carved from the expanding industrial landscape.
