Up close, the ribbed concrete face of Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik climbs from the dark ground into a black sky. Tall, stepped columns line both sides of the central tower, and their rough, pitted surface is picked out by floodlights set at their base. A narrow pointed window with red, blue and yellow glass glows at the center, set into a tall arch above a dark door. Small rectangular slits mark the wall higher up. On the right the columns grow shorter and thicker as they sweep away from the tower, with a metal railing running along the foot of the wall.
