Coconino County, United StatesA pale sandstone outcrop juts into open air at an overlook on East Rim Drive, its blocks broken into angular slabs. Juniper and low shrubs grow in the cracks and along the sandy ledge beside it. Behind the point, the canyon drops away in reddish terraces and gray slopes toward a distant, level horizon. Thin streaks of cloud cross the upper sky, thickening into darker gray banks near the skyline.
