Coconino County, United StatesAlong East Rim Drive in Arizona, the canyon opens below a sky of heavy white cumulus. In the left foreground a sandstone buttress shows stacked bands of rust and tan, dotted with small green shrubs. Beyond it the terraces step down in gray, pink and red layers toward a far wall that fades into blue haze. A thin curtain of rain falls from the dark cloud base over the distant rim. Pale rock fills the lower right corner, where a few scrubby plants cling to the edge, and the whole scene is lit in patches as the clouds move.
