BusanWinter dawn breaks over Busan's Seo-gu district as seen from Deungdae-ro, the lighthouse road that traces the southern tip of the city's peninsula. The December sun has just cleared the eastern horizon, painting the sky in graduated bands of amber, peach, and pale blue that reflect off the calm surface of the harbor below. Mountain silhouettes - the coastal ridges that give Busan its dramatic topography - rise in dark layers against the brightening sky, each successive ridge a shade lighter than the last. The port infrastructure of Korea's largest maritime city is visible in miniature: crane gantries, container stacks, and the angular forms of cargo vessels riding at anchor. At this hour the city is still mostly asleep, the streets below carrying only the first delivery trucks and fishing boats heading out through the harbor mouth. The warmth of the sunrise palette contrasts with the December chill that makes every exhaled breath visible.
