On Hyangiram-ro overlooking the South Sea, the September midday sun illuminates the coastal landscape in even, documentary light that reveals every geological layer of the cliff face and every gradation of blue in the water below. The sea here is remarkably clear, a product of the Tsushima Current that brings warm, clean water northward from the Pacific, and near the shore the rocky bottom is visible through several meters of turquoise. Camellia and pine forests carpet the slopes above the cliff line, their deep green providing a stable visual anchor against the shifting blues of sea and sky. This stretch of coast has been a site of spiritual retreat since antiquity, and the landscape retains an elemental quality that explains why monks chose to build here.
