Photographed at Daehak-dong, Seoul in October 2025
The forested slopes of Gwanaksan rise above Seoul's Daehak-dong in early October, the mountain's dense canopy still holding summer's deep green but now underlit by the first scattered strokes of autumn gold. The trail here follows one of the lower ridges that radiate from the main summit like the ribs of a fan, and the afternoon light filters through the canopy in shifting patterns that make the forest floor a mosaic of light and shadow. Gwanaksan, at 632 meters, is the highest peak within Seoul's administrative boundaries and has been a hiking destination since the Joseon Dynasty, when scholars from the nearby Confucian academy would climb for contemplation. The cool October air carries the earthy scent of decomposing leaves, the mountain's annual recycling already underway.
