Kyoto, JapanA moss-covered slope fills the garden with a patchwork of olive green and yellow, scattered with gray stones of every size. Several young trees, bare of leaves, lean on bamboo poles lashed together to hold them upright. Clipped round shrubs sit on both sides, and a larger glossy evergreen fills the upper left. Tall grass and small ferns grow at the bottom, where a narrow dark stream trickles between rocks. Overcast daylight lays an even, soft tone over every surface, so the textures of lichen, bark and stone read clearly from the foreground to the trees at the back.
