Jeondong Cathedral in Jeonju rises in warm light against the deep black April night sky, its Romanesque brick facade and twin bell towers creating a striking silhouette on Taejo-ro. Built in 1914 on the site where Korea's first Catholic martyrs were executed in 1791, the cathedral blends Western ecclesiastical architecture with Korean construction sensibilities. The red and cream brickwork glows under carefully placed spotlights, the arched windows and circular rose window creating patterns of light and shadow. Blue and gold stained glass is faintly visible in the tower windows, illuminated from within. A religious statue stands in the garden to the left, while the stone-paved plaza extends empty in the foreground. Jeonju's Hanok Village draws visitors primarily for its traditional Korean architecture, but this cathedral proves the city's cultural landscape has always been more layered than a single tradition, a place where East and West, ancient and modern, have coexisted for over a century.
