Taejo-ro, the main pedestrian thoroughfare of Jeonju Hanok Village, bustles with spring weekend visitors streaming in both directions along the wide cobblestone street. Red and purple fabric lanterns hang from white cross-shaped street poles at regular intervals, their bold colors creating a festive rhythm that leads the eye deep into the frame toward the forested hillside that backs the village. Traditional hanok buildings with dark timber frames and gray tile roofs line the right side, their eaves sheltering shop signs for teahouses, craft stores, and restaurants that have taken up residence in these converted traditional structures. The crowd wears the layered clothing of late March, jackets and light coats still necessary despite the brightening season. Bare deciduous trees line the avenue on both sides, their branches creating a delicate lacework against the overcast sky, just days away from the leaf emergence that will transform this corridor into a green tunnel. The mountain behind the village shows the very first hints of spring green among its brown winter canopy, that brief transitional moment Korean poets call gaenari, when golden forsythia and green buds signal the irreversible arrival of warmth. With over 700 traditional buildings, Jeonju Hanok Village is the largest preserved concentration of pre-modern Korean residential architecture and serves as a living demonstration that traditional building forms can adapt to contemporary commercial use without losing their essential character.
