JejuA golden barley field stretches wide across Jeju's midlands near Yeongil-gil, the ripe grain swaying in unison under late afternoon sun. Behind the field, a windbreak of dark green trees, likely Japanese black pine and evergreen oak, forms a dense horizontal band that separates the warm gold of the crop from the pale blue sky. A few basalt rocks peek through the barley at the very bottom of the frame, a reminder that this fertile-looking field sits atop Jeju's volcanic foundation. Barley is one of Jeju's traditional crops, sown in autumn and harvested in early summer, and by May the fields turn the island's interior into something resembling the wheat fields of Provence. The warm tones and simple horizontal composition give this the calm, grounded feeling of agricultural time.
