In Ara-dong's Yeongpyeong-gil, the forest canopy closes overhead in a dense vault of October green, the evergreen broadleaf trees that characterize Jeju's lowland forests maintaining their foliage long after mainland Korea has turned to autumn color. The trail passes through a landscape of volcanic soil and moss-covered basalt, where Jeju's unique subtropical forest ecology creates an almost primeval atmosphere. Light filters through the canopy in scattered pools, illuminating fern fronds and the glossy leaves of camellias and chinquapins. Ara-dong's forests sit in the transition zone between Jeju City's urban sprawl and the protected slopes of Hallasan National Park.
