IncheonHigh-rise apartment towers rise in a uniform wall along the horizon behind a foreground of dried winter reeds and dormant farmland near the Incheondaegyo Expressway in Songdo. The towers, perhaps twenty to thirty stories tall, stand in a dense row that stretches across the entire frame, their gray and beige facades catching the flat December afternoon light. Street lamps have just switched on, adding dots of warm light between the buildings and the reed field. The reeds occupy the lower third of the frame in shades of golden brown, their dried stalks swaying slightly, and the raw earth of fallow agricultural plots is visible between the reed patches. The sky above is an enormous expanse of pale lavender-gray, overcast and featureless, taking up the upper half of the frame. The juxtaposition of undeveloped wetland and massive residential development in a single frame captures the ongoing transformation of Incheon's reclaimed coastal areas, where brand-new satellite cities sprout next to tidal flats that were rice paddies or mudflats just years ago. The muted winter palette of brown, gray, and pale sky gives the scene a contemplative, almost melancholic quality.
