Running Icelandic horses fill the lower half of this scene, from a dapple-gray mare at the left to a chestnut at the right, with a black one at the center close to the camera. Their manes blow back and the dry grass beneath them looks flattened and pale. A thin fence crosses the field before a long, dark gravel ridge. Behind it the sun is just breaking through, with pale gold at the crest and pink and gray clouds stretching across the evening sky. Black gravel and a few thin grass stems lie along the foreground edge, and a dark window frame cuts across the lower right corner, where dust softens the horses' legs.
