The imposing stone walls of Namhansanseong Fortress extend along a mountain ridge in Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi Province, their rough-hewn granite blocks fitted together with remarkable precision. Built originally during the Baekje period and extensively reconstructed during the Joseon Dynasty in the 1620s, these fortification walls have withstood centuries of weathering and conflict. The stonework displays a range of textures, from smoothly dressed blocks at the base to more irregular stones higher up, a testament to different construction phases across Korean history. Winter has stripped the surrounding hardwood trees bare, allowing an unobstructed view of the wall's impressive scale as it follows the natural contours of the mountainside. The fortress perimeter stretches approximately twelve kilometers around the summit, enclosing what was once a fully functioning emergency capital with government offices, temples, and military facilities. In this February scene, the muted brown tones of dormant vegetation contrast with the enduring grey of the ancient stonework, creating a contemplative atmosphere that invites reflection on the passage of time.
