Photographed at Gangwon-do in December 2021
Bare deciduous trees fill the frame in a dense winter forest along a mountain valley in Gangwon-do, their pale gray branches creating an intricate network of fine lines against a flawless cobalt blue December sky. The mountainside rises steeply in the background, its rocky summit dusted with patches of frost or light snow that catch the midday sun. A single tall tree arches from the left side of the frame, its slender trunk and spreading crown providing a graceful focal point against the mass of smaller trees below. The forest floor and lower slopes show the characteristic russet-brown tones of Korean winter deciduous woodland, where fallen leaves and dormant undergrowth create warm earth-toned contrast to the cool sky above. A utility pole is barely visible among the branches, the only sign of human presence in this otherwise pure mountain landscape. Gangwon-do's inner mountain valleys reach some of the coldest temperatures in South Korea, and the absolute clarity of the air here speaks to that deep winter chill.
