Yangpyeong-gunA striking suspended stone installation floats in a dark gallery space in Muwang-ri, Yangpyeong-gun, creating an illusion of levitation through hundreds of thin vertical strings or wires. Countless small stones and rock fragments are threaded onto these strings, which descend from the ceiling to form a large, roughly elliptical mass that hovers above the polished wooden floor at roughly waist height. The stones are arranged in a dense cluster at the lower level, creating a solid-looking floating platform, while the upper portion where they connect to the ceiling appears more sparse and dispersed, giving the impression that the stones are being drawn upward by some invisible force. Dramatic side lighting illuminates the installation, casting an intricate dappled shadow pattern on the floor beneath that mirrors and echoes the form of the floating stone mass above. The dark walls of the gallery recede into shadow, focusing all attention on the suspended sculpture and its ethereal shadow play. The overall effect is one of gravity defied, as though a section of the earth has been gently lifted and held aloft by invisible threads.
