La Paz, BoliviaAt the Valle de la Luna near La Paz, a tall green cactus rises in front of pale clay pillars under a flat, deep blue sky. On the right, a rough spire of sand-colored earth towers above lower mounds, its surface scored by narrow grooves running down its face. Behind them, brown and purple-gray mountains run across the frame, their upper ridges cut into thin layers. Small agaves and thin cacti grow from the dry ground in the foreground. A faint red fence is visible at the bottom edge. The sunlight is crisp and low enough to bring out every ridge in the eroded rock.
