Sapporo, JapanLooking down a covered shopping street in Sapporo, the camera faces a tiled archway marked with the characters for Tanukikoji and the number two. Beyond it the translucent roof repeats in a long series of ribbed arches that shrink toward a bright vanishing point. Hanging signs on curved brackets line both sides, and shopfronts glow with red, yellow and pink lettering, including a familiar golden-arches sign on the right. A crowd of shoppers fills the pavement in the foreground, many with backpacks, walking toward the viewer in the soft daylight that filters through the roof panels.
