Looking straight up inside the cathedral in Rio de Janeiro, four tall bands of stained glass meet around a cross of pale light. Red, green, blue and yellow fragments fill the slanted windows on the left and right, while the lower panel glows green with a golden figure at its center. Dark concrete walls curve upward, cut into deep square coffers that form a dense grid. The cross at the middle is made of small white openings, bright against the shadowed stone. Diagonal ribs and ledges lead the eye inward toward the point where the glass and the grid come together.
