The lower deck and iron arch of Porto's Dom Luis I Bridge sweep across the left half of the frame, trusses overlapping in a fine grey web. Beneath the arch, the Douro runs dark and glassy toward a stone quay, with small boats tied up near the far bank. Houses in red, cream and blue step up a green slope on the right, topped by an old stone wall, and a thin funicular line cuts diagonally through the buildings. Cloud covers the whole sky in soft grey. The pale walkway along the underside of the arch gives the picture its main line, curving down from the pier at lower left.
