Two hippopotamuses stand at the edge of a shallow pool, seen from behind a dark frame that crops the picture on both sides. The nearer animal lowers its snout toward a patch of grass at left, while the other faces away, its rounded back and short tail toward the viewer. Their skin is a smooth purplish brown. Behind them, a black wooden fence runs along the yard, with pale green concrete blocks set into it. Green trees and tall grasses rise beyond, and a few orange autumn leaves show in the branches at upper left. The pool water is olive green and rippled, and a metal rail crosses the lower part of the frame.
