Milan, ItalyThe white marble facade of Milan Cathedral rises over a crowded square, its tall spires fanning out against a clear blue sky. Rows of narrow pointed windows and carved niches climb the wall, with five dark doorways at the base, the central one the largest. Crowds fill the front of the square, some holding up cameras and others standing in small groups, with pigeons scattered across the stone. Pale arcaded buildings sit at the left and right edges of the frame. Fine stone tracery, small statues and balustrades give the surface a dense, lace-like texture in the midday light.
