Under a deep, cloudless blue sky, a long brown ridge rises behind the pale badlands of Valle de la Luna in the Mallasa district of La Paz. In the foreground, cream-colored earth has been carved into ragged pinnacles and narrow gullies, with dark shadows pooling between the sharp edges. A line of dark green trees marks the valley floor beyond the cliffs, and a few red-roofed houses sit at the foot of the mountain. The ridge is dry and layered in grey, ochre and rust, its crest broken into small crags. Sunlight falls from high overhead, making the rock look dry and bright.
