The coast at Hajodaehaean-gil in Hyeonbuk catches the first light of September, summer's intensity already beginning to soften into early autumn clarity. Dark volcanic rocks anchor the foreground while the East Sea extends in bands of teal and navy toward a horizon obscured by sea haze. The beach is nearly deserted, the summer crowds having retreated with the school calendar. Dried seaweed and driftwood line the high-tide mark, natural debris that no one bothers to clear on this stretch of Gangwon Province coastline where the wild character of the shore is part of its appeal.
