Photographed at Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi-do in November 2025
Hwadam Forest in Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi Province, reaches the crescendo of its autumn color display in the second week of November, the maple canopy overhead erupting in scarlet, vermillion, and gold against a sky of crystalline blue. The forest, part of a private arboretum operated by the Kolon Group, occupies a valley on the western slopes of the mountains east of Seoul, where the elevation and north-facing aspect concentrate the autumn color into a compressed spectacle. Walking paths wind through the collection of Korean native maples, oaks, and hornbeams, each species turning at its own pace to create a layered tapestry of warm color. The November light filters through the thinning canopy with a warmth that belies the cooling air.
