Photographed at 연화봉, Hyoja-dong, Goyang-si in May 2025
From the summit boulders of Yeonhwabong in Goyang-si, a breathtaking panorama unfolds across the northwestern reaches of the Seoul metropolitan area, with smooth granite domes in the immediate foreground giving way to a vast landscape of forested ridges, urban sprawl, and distant mountains dissolving into atmospheric haze. The foreground rocks are classic Bukhansan granite - their surfaces rounded by eons of weathering into gentle domes and curves, their warm grey-beige surfaces catching the afternoon sun at a low angle. In the middle ground, a distinctive stacked rock formation stands as a natural cairn on a nearby peak, its improbable balance adding a sculptural element to the already dramatic ridgeline. The forested slopes below are thick with spring green - the canopy unbroken and lush at this stage of early May - while beyond the forest edge, the built environment of Goyang-si and northwestern Seoul extends in a grid of apartment complexes and urban infrastructure. The mountains continue in diminishing layers toward the horizon, where they become pale blue silhouettes against a milky sky. This is one of Bukhansan's finest summit views - the rare vantage point where you can read the entire geological and human history of the Seoul basin in a single sweep of the eye.
