Rugged volcanic coastline meets the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean at Goseong-ri in Seogwipo, on the southern shore of Jeju Island. Dark, jagged basalt rocks in various shades of black, rust-red, and deep green occupy the foreground, their rough surfaces shaped by countless years of wave erosion and volcanic activity. Small tidal pools have formed in the depressions between the rocks, creating miniature ecosystems along the shore. The ocean beyond is a steely blue-gray, its surface textured by light wind chop that extends to the distant horizon. A few small rocky outcrops break the surface of the water further out, hinting at the volcanic reef system that extends beneath the waves. The sky is filled with dramatic layers of gray and white clouds that cast shifting patterns of light across the water's surface. Low-growing coastal plants cling to the edges of the volcanic rock in the lower left corner, demonstrating the tenacity of life on this wind-swept shore. This raw, elemental landscape showcases the powerful geological forces that created Jeju Island.
