Photographed at Jeungsan-dong, Gyo-dong, Samcheok-si in January 2026
Dramatic rocky formations rise from the churning winter surf at Jeungsan-dong in Samcheok, their jagged silhouettes standing like natural sentinels against the deep blue expanse of the East Sea. The tallest rock spires reach several meters above the waterline, their dark stone surfaces worn smooth on the seaward side and rough with barnacles and mineral deposits on the sheltered faces. Waves break in white cascades around the base of these formations, sending spray into the cold January air as the ocean pushes between and around the clustered rocks. A pine-covered headland anchors the left side of the composition, its low stone wall and small coastal structures suggesting a long history of human habitation alongside this rugged shoreline. In the far background, a concrete breakwater with red navigation markers stretches across the horizon, while yellow buoys bob in the water marking fishing areas or swimming boundaries. The beach in the foreground shows a thin strip of wet sand where the tide has recently receded, its surface gleaming with reflected light from the brilliant winter sky overhead.
