Photographed at Udohaean-gil, Jeju in May 2024
Crystal-clear turquoise water spreads across a shallow bay on Udo Island along Udohaean-gil, the seafloor visible through the transparent surface in patterns of dark volcanic rock and pale sand. Black basalt shelf extends from the foreground with scattered seaweed and tidal debris, while a low flat island with a few buildings sits on the far side of the lagoon. Above, dramatic clouds mass in layers of white and slate gray, threatening rain but allowing enough light through to illuminate the water's extraordinary color. The contrast between the threatening sky and the almost tropical water clarity creates a visual tension that makes the image compelling. Udo's waters are famous for this clarity, fed by underground springs that filter through Jeju's porous volcanic rock, and even on overcast days the sea glows with an inner light that seems to belong to latitudes much farther south.
