Photographed at Bunhwangsa Temple, Gyeongju-si in April 2024
Bunhwangsa Temple's ancient stone pagoda stands under clear April sky in Gyeongju, its stepped pyramid form built from precisely cut dark stone blocks rising above a base guarded by a carved stone lion. The lion sits alert and muscular on its pedestal, a guardian figure common at Korean Buddhist temple entrances, its weathered surface showing the patina of thirteen centuries. Behind the pagoda, carved stone panels with Buddhist figures are visible, their reliefs softened by time but still readable. An informational plaque stands in the foreground. Bunhwangsa was built in 634 AD during Queen Seondeok's reign, making it one of the oldest surviving stone structures in Korea. Only three of the original nine tiers remain, yet the pagoda retains a commanding presence. The portrait orientation captures the full height of the structure against the sky, the dark stone creating a powerful vertical anchor that speaks to the engineering ambitions of the Silla dynasty at its peak.
