Afternoon sunlight floods the interior of a converted warehouse cafe in Siksa-dong, Goyang-si, its industrial steel beams and brick walls softened by a profusion of tropical plants. A large areca palm dominates the left side of the frame, its fronds catching the golden light from clerestory windows above. On the right, a spectacular cascade of colorful glass baubles or resin ornaments hangs from the ceiling in a curtain-like installation, their translucent spheres in red, blue, green, and amber catching and scattering the light in a dazzling display. A crystal chandelier-style sphere glows near the upper left, adding vintage glamour to the industrial setting. Through the upper windows, diners are visible on a mezzanine level. The combination of raw industrial architecture, lush plants, and decorative maximalism is quintessentially Korean cafe culture, where the interior design is often as much of a draw as the coffee itself. Goyang's Siksa-dong neighborhood has emerged in recent years as a suburban cafe destination, with converted warehouses and purpose-built spaces that rival Seoul's trendiest neighborhoods. The warm afternoon light entering from above gives the space a greenhouse quality that makes winter disappear entirely.
